Interrogation

A Comic Written by Shan Lind, and Illustrated by Balee Leggett

The opening scene is Gustav Glasseyes tied to a chair in the middle of an airy office study. There is a large writing desk, the floor is carpeted plushly, and even the chair Gustav is bound to is an old and comfortable rocker. His arms are enormous, and his stature, even sitting down, dwarfs Captain Amelia Lovelace, who is standing with ramrod correctness across from the slouching Striker. Behind Gustav is the desk, and behind that desk is a large window overlooking Essex from a third story view.

His arms are enormous, and his stature, even sitting down, dwarfs Captain Amelia Lovelace, who is standing with ramrod correctness across from the slouching Striker. Behind Gustav is the desk, and behind that desk is a large window overlooking Essex from a third story view.

First panel: A view of the office as seen from outside its large window. Gustav’s back is to us and he is sitting in a chair. We can barely see Captain Amelia Lovelce standing in front of him, arms crossed behind her back. There are Essex Protectorate Guards standing outside.

Dialog: “All this for a grudge against a cultist, Gustav? I know you’re not above beating a man into a coma - I don’t know why I’m surprised you’d stoop to gross arson.” Amelia Speaking, fancy script

Second panel: Closeup of Gustav’s face with a little dried blood on his temple. He’s clearly been in a fight before he was tied up here. His eyes are pale blue, almost white, and he’s glaring moodily at Captain Amelia.

Dialog: “Listen bloodhound, I don’t know the first thing about arson and I don’t care to learn…” Gustav speaking, blocky script

Third panel, mirroring the second : Captain Amelia's face is round, forthcoming, and her hair is a mousy brown braided on either side of her head. Her uniform is starched and her hands are held behind her back. She is looking down at Gustav.

Dialog: “I spent the entire night crossfaded at the Cistern, not burning down old hotels in the Scrape-.” Gustav speaking - but is cut off
Fourth panel, interrupting: Amelia finger to Gustav’s lips, she replies “I have multiple reports of you, and your crew, at the scene of the crime less than thirty minutes after the fire started”

Fifth panel: Gustav leans forward, obviously frustrated and the ropes that bind him to his chair are straining. Amelia leans back, animated and jumpy so near the hulking Striker.
Dialog: “We went there to HELP, Lovelace. Have some of your family’s lauded faith and believe me when I say the Red Ledger aren’t going to waste good diesel on some shitty girders next to a pissy morgue.”

Sixth Panel: (from Gustav’s POV) Collecting herself and leaning in, Captain Amelia gets a hard look in her eye and she plants a finger on Gustav’s chest. (literally at the audience, from Gustav’s POV)

Dialog: “In order for me to BEGIN to believe you, I’d need the real culprit to give me some kind unassailable proof, Ledgeman. You’ve got a motive and witnesses. I need to see some-”

Seventh Panel: Ameliea’s eyes go wide, she is looking behind Gustav now. The shading is such to reflect a very bright light outside, as if she is witnessing an explosion outside her window. Her hair is blowing back, there is glass everywhere.

Dialog: “WHOOM” (explosion noise)

Eighth Panel: Amelia’s POV, Gustav is looking at her with the expression of a person who has just had their eardrums ruptured but is trying to maintain their good humor about it. Framed in the window behind Gustav, in the courtyard outside the Essex Protectorate, are a group of Tiny God Cultists lobbing molotov's at the Protectorate Headquarters.

Ninth Panel: Amelia POV Zoom in on Cultists, one of them is holding a sign that says “COMMIT YOURSELF TO THE CRUCIBLE, BURN”.

Dialog: “...Captain?” Gustav Speaking

Tenth Panel: Amelia looking tiredly over the top of Gustav’s head. Her hands are behind her back again. Gustav is looking up at her quizzically.

Dialog: “Break those ropes, Glasseyes. You’re lucky, like always.”

Eleventh Panel: Gustav does so immediately, there is an audible SNAP and he moves to stand.

Dialog: “Alright captain, let’s get to work then.”
