Contracts

Out Of Character Clarification: It is illegal to break a contract in the San Saba Territories. If your character breaks a contract, they may be the target of bounties, or the subject of some more insidious justice.

The collective goal of the San Saba Board is to establish a new sense of order throughout the wastes. When so many powerful people and factions are joined together in the pursuit of one vision, there is a need for the common folk to choose a side and declare their loyalty. Thus, all law-abiding inhabitants of the Wastes are expected to have a Contract. In fact, when Bravado was a burgeoning boomtown, Contracts were “the Sum and Whole of the Law”, and while that has changed with the appointment of the San Saba board, there are many for whom this decree still holds primary sway as an integral part of Bravado culture.

While the exact terms may differ from faction to faction, a Contract simply establishes a person’s right to do business within the Territories on behalf of a major faction and in return their right to exist and prosper in the Territories will be protected by that faction. Contracts can be signed with other parties past the major factions, but every contract signed within the Territories is ultimately backed by the trust and credit of the major Financial Institutions and the San Saba Board itself. Boilerplate Contracts are available at every Depot through the Territories and every Duster can find a few folks willing to offer them a preliminary offer of work.

Within a faction, those that simply hold a contract are known as Contractors. Those that show particular loyalty to a faction may earn Society Membership and the Stakeholder title by performing jobs for that faction and proving their loyalty. Those that prove themselves above and beyond the terms of their contracts may eventually gain the perks of the Trustee title. The exact names of these ranks within each faction may differ, but the benefits are similar.

Note: When a Guide or NPC uses the phrase “I need to check your contract” within the game, this normally refers to the act of checking your character sheet to see if you have the appropriate Society Membership. This is partially an out of character behavior, but allows a narrative explanation for anything that refers to the character sheet in game. Try to refer to your character sheet as your “contract” whenever possible!
